Send an invitation to user-assigned devices

You can send an invitation to devices that are assigned to user accounts. These invitations request the user of the device to enroll in VPP managed distribution.

Before you send an invitation to a device, you may want to assign apps and books to user groups. For information, see Managed distribution.

  1. Create users and user groups or bind to another supported directory service. For information, see Create a user account or Create a group in Server Help.

  2. Install the Volume Purchase Program service token. For information, see View app and book purchases in Server Help.

  3. Enroll devices with Profile Manager. For information, see Provide access to the user portal.

  4. Assign enrolled devices to users. For information, see Associate devices with users.

  5. Use the Profile Manager sidebar to select the user or group, and then click the About tab.

  6. Click the VPP Managed Distribution triangle if necessary, and select Enable VPP Managed Distribution Services. Then click Save.

    • For a user, click “Send invitation to [device name],” where [device name] is the name given to the device when it was enrolled.

    • For a group, you may need to select between users not previously invited or users that have not yet enrolled. Selecting between them updates the info status text, letting you know how many invitations will be sent.

    • For a group, click “Send invitation to users’ devices,” review the confirmation dialog, and then click Send.

Note: You must have port 25 open on your firewall for Profile Manager to send the invitation to users. If you want to use your mail server as a relay, select “Relay outgoing mail through ISP” in the Mail service and enter your outgoing mail server name in the window.

Regardless of whether a user has been invited, or invited but not enrolled, iOS devices receive a push notification. Mac computers receive notification in Notification Center.

Once the user or all users in a group accept, the user shows as enrolled in the About tab.

  7. Click Active Tasks in the Profile Manager sidebar to view device invitations. Invitations show the user’s full name and the name of the device.
